When we work on a new song I usually like to play it through once on my acoustic so the team can get an overall feel of things but then I like to let the band play what they feel. There are times that we have come up with sounds and combinations that are so much more powerful or cool for lack of a better term than what we could have done trying to emulate the original artist.

I do like to honor the original artists rendition of the music as I feel they have some inspiration from God in what they layed down but I also don't have a bunch of professional musicians and I need to let my people give their best offering, whatever that might be.

Rain Down by David Crowder comes to mind.. I played it and sang it, I gave them some direction and then we just worked it out.. I've heard comments from friends that are Crowder fans that when we have the whole band they like our version better..Wow, that blows me away. Had I tried to get my team of musicians to do what was on the CD we would have had our heads fried.

Key? We work with that based on vocal range. I'm not singing in the same key as Bart Millard and neither is anyone else on our team so we work around that some.. That's why I love the key change function on SongSelect.

There are times when we will play the CD a few times through when I feel my team can get what's on the CD and make it happen and it is easier by just listening a few times but it can also make it more difficult becuase people are pushed past their ability and frustration ensues.
